Course Syllabus

The framework for global competition has changed significantly in recent years. In Japan, the hollowing out of industry is progressing as newly industrialized countries starting with China increase output of high quality, low cost goods; an area of strength in the past for Japanese industrial competitiveness. In order to respond to this trend and regain competitiveness in the global environment, creation of new products and services becomes imperative. New technologies and ideas will form the basis for creating such new businesses.

Intellectual property rights are vital in this process because they are designed to protect the new technologies and ideas that are developed by individuals or groups. They are the driving force that creates new businesses and are in the spotlight as management resources that can protect competitiveness. In particular, science and engineering personnel who were heretofore involved only in the research and development of such technologies and ideas will be required to have a broad understanding of intellectual property rights.

This special lecture is therefore being held to deepen your understanding of issues related to intellectual property rights including the framework for intellectual property rights with a special emphasis on patents, policy trends, practical use at the corporate level, and technology transfer of research findings at the university level. Some lectures will be handled by guest speakers who are experts in the subject.
